What is Knytt?

Knytt is a series of minimalist/atmospheric platforming games made by Swedish game developer Nicklas "Nifflas" Nygren. Most have been released as freeware. The games in the series are:

Knytt

The original. A short but sweet low-intensity platformer where you help a small creature (the titular "knytt") gather spaceship parts on an alien world.

Knytt Stories

A sequel to the original Knytt, and by far the most popular game of the bunch. If you're here, this is probably what you're looking for. Knytt Stories shipped with an intuitive yet surprisingly powerful level editor which allowed players to create their own metroidvania adventures. Many of these user-created levels have been quite elaborate, featuring custom music and graphics and telling entire original stories, with more recent level authors using KS something like a lightweight game engine. The preservation of these many fan creations is the primary purpose of this pack. The inclusion of WaDF and other Knytt games is mostly in the name of providing context and archival completeness.

Despite being almost two decades old, new KS levels are still being released with some regularity. A few fan projects sought to extend KS's functionality. These are:

Knytt Experiment

Building off the concept of user-created levels as introduced in Knytt Stories, this was a short-lived experiment wherein users would submit individual screens which would then be stitched together into wider worlds that players could then navigate and explore. The experiment was soon abandoned and, as far as I know, no complete archive of all submitted screens was ever made available. The version included in the pack is my own copy, and what content is included is just what I downloaded myself back in the day.

If you possess a more complete version of any of the worlds or know where an archive of these can be found, please let me know. My email address can be found at the bottom of this page.

Knytt Nano

As the name might imply, this is a tiny Knytt game, in more ways than one. Released as part of "Nano Pack Vol. 1" (no further volumes were ever made) which featured several such mini-games. In the words of Nifflas:

Knytt Nano was originally intended to be a new Knytt game, but I ended up developing NightSky instead. I didn't want to throw away the content I had created, so I created a small minigame out of the sprites.

Brutally Unfair Knytt

Also known as K.N.Y.T.T., this is a mod of the original Knytt developed by the guys who made B.U.T.T.O.N. in cooperation with Nifflas. From what I can tell, it is a retextured version of Knytt with some silly (or annoying) challenges that pop up from time to time, and some pathways closed off, ensuring you will be forced to take the most circuitous possible route to your destination.

Knytt Underground

The one non-freeware game in the series. Not included in this pack. You can buy it on Steam.

Other

Within a Deep Forest (and its spiritual semi-successor, NightSky) is deeply intertwined with Knytt. The original Knytt game's protagonist started out as a small background character in that game. Knytt Underground is technically a direct sequel to WaDF, and its gameplay is a combination of WaDF's ball-bouncing with the more traditional platforming of the other Knytt games. For these reasons, WaDF is included in this pack. It is also a very fun game in its own right.

FiNCK is another game by Nifflas, in many ways similar to Knytt Stories. It, too, features a level editor that players can use to make their own levels. It did not catch on the way Knytt Stories did though, and as of 2026 the FiNCK Level Releases subforum has only 4 threads... For this reason it has not been included in the pack.

Saira is sometimes seen as a sort of spiritual successor to Knytt, although it was released before Knytt Underground. Originally a paid product, it's since been released for free alongside its source code. It is included in the pack.

The Great Work is yet another Nifflas game similar to Knytt, although its visuals and general vibe are much closer to Knytt Underground than any of the "classic" Knytt games. It was released alongside its source code. Included in the pack.

What is The Complete Knytt Archive?

"The Internet is Forever," an old 2000s adage goes. Back in the day it really did seem that way, but the past 15+ years have shown how wrong that idea is. Much of the web suffers from pervasive link rot, and everything from old articles to forum posts and images and blogs and entire websites tend to disappear at an alarming rate. A lot of what is there can only be found on closed-garden platforms, e.g. Discord servers and the like. Much of the web's collective memory now rests entirely on the invaluable work of the people over at the Internet Archive.

In this chaotic churn of Content, small and semi-obscure little freeware games like the Knytt series are particularly vulnerable. Nifflas, the creator, has withdrawn his old website, leaving many of his little projects scattered across the web. KS can still be obtained with relative ease via the KS+ website and levels can be found on the Knytt Stories Level Archive, but for how long? Many Knytt Stories levels have already been lost to expired Mediafire and Rapidshare links.

To preempt the disappearance of these resources, I decided to compile as much Knytt stuff as I could find and put it all into one big repository for the convenience of fellow data hoarders. I encourage you all to download and keep your own copies.
